NYCHA’s Queensbridge Houses gets a vegetarian, vegan friendly community fridge

QUEENS — Community fridges popped up all across New York City to combat food insecurity.  

Now, several grassroots organizations are creating the first vegetarian and vegan friendly community fridges in Queens; it’s called the Queensbridge Community Fridge and it’s open  24/7. The fridge is stocked with fresh produce, plant-based milk, and bread. There’s no meat because it’s vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Go Vegetarian in Honor of Late Vegan Activist Tommy Raskin

This week, United States House Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced her intent to go vegetarian for Lent, a Catholic holiday that is observed from February 17 until April 3 this year. Ocasio-Cortez explained that she was inspired to remove meat from her diet by Tommy Raskin—a vegan activist, and son of fellow US Representative Jamie Raskin, who died by suicide on December 31, 2020.
