Taco Bell New Plant-Based Protein for Vegans and Vegetarians

Taco Bell is testing its own plant-based protein creation called the “Cravetarian” Taco. 

The new vegan creation is made of a blend of peas and chickpeas, and comes with shredded cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sour cream in a crunchy shell. Taco Bell says the new dish comes in at 180 calories, comparable to the 190 calories in a standard Crunchy Taco Supreme.

Because the Cravetarian protein is vegan, nearly any menu item can be made vegan. The protein can be swapped into chalupas, burritos, and other iconic Taco Bell dishes.

“The term ‘Cravetarian’ is inspired by all of Taco Bell’s craveable options and it emphasizes how no one should have to sacrifice bold flavors for their lifestyle,” Taco Bell said in a statement.

The new protein is only available at one Taco Bell location — 14042 Red Hill Ave. in Tustin, California — through April 29, and sells for $2.19

Taco Bell is usually a go-to fast food chain for vegans and vegetarians, which the company has openly courted as it “strives to become the leader in vegetarian in the QSR industry” according to a press release. Black beans can be substituted for meat in most dishes, and ordering items “fresco style” replaces dairy add-ons with tomatoes, making those dishes vegan.

In March, Taco Bell brought potatoes back onto menus after months of protest from vegan and vegetarian customers. Next up, Taco Bell plans to introduce more meatless options by teaming up with Beyond Meat.

“By testing and offering a wide breadth of meatless options, Taco Bell doubles down on its pledge to bring more innovation to the vegetarian space,” the chain said in a statement.
